about me

Fiona Peniston-Bird, the founder of nmprescribing which she set up in March 2007.  She has considerable expertise in all matters related to Non-Medical Prescribing development and implementation. Fiona Peniston-Bird works in an independent role; advising health providing organisations on what is required for the development and implementation of Non-Medical Prescribing, both NHS and non-NHS, as well as providing Continued Professional Development across a wide range of topics, for Non-Medical Prescribers.

Fiona Peniston-Bird qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1989. Working in Brighton hospitals as a staff nurse and early in her nursing career, Fiona won a team award for developing a patient self-administration of medicines project in 1990. In 1992 she took a post as a community nurse in Hove, East Sussex. In 1998 Fiona undertook a BSc Hons specialist practitioner degree and attained a 2:1 in Health Visiting. Whilst working in a Health Visiting role she was one of the first nurses in the UK who undertook the Extended Formulary Nurse Prescribing training in early 2002.  Fiona subsequently set up and ran a minor ailments clinic within a GP practice in Shoreham, West Sussex where she was able to implement prescribing.

Frustrated by lack of support, infrastructure and continued professional development to support her prescribing practice, Fiona was delighted to take up the role of Non-Medical Prescribing Facilitator for the Strategic Health Authority covering Surrey & Sussex in 2003, bringing with her an understanding of what was required in terms of development by organisations to support their Non-Medical Prescribers.  Fiona is qualified in both foundation and practitioner level PRINCE2 project management.  She has completed bespoke Non-Medical Prescribing project work for Health Education Kent, Surrey and Sussex and Health Education England.  During 2013-14 Fiona undertook a Training Needs Analysis for Nuffield Health across 31 hospitals within the UK.  Fiona was a Subject Matter Expert on the Nursing and Midwifery Council Consultation Assimilation Panel following the Medicines Management and Prescribing Consultation in 2017. More recently the Royal Pharmaceutical Society have invited her to join their current project developing a new competency framework for those taking on a practice supervisor/assessor role for non-medical prescribing trainees.

Fiona is Prescribing Lead for Nurses on the Independent and Supplementary Prescribing programme at Medway School of Pharmacy, University of Kent and University of Greenwich, she is also support tutor with the same course at University of Nottingham. Fiona is External Examiner on all of the prescribing programmes at University of Hertfordshire and has been a visiting lecturer at University of Brighton and London South Bank University. Fiona is a member of the BNF Nurse Prescribers Advisory Group who review the Nurse Prescribers Formulary (NPF) and is also a member of the editoral board for the Journal of Prescribing Practice (formerly Nurse Prescribing journal).  Fiona is regularly invited as a speaker at local and national conferences held across the UK.
